There's nothing like a good old fashioned campfire. One of my favorite things about working at The World Fellowship Center in NH (Noam Chomsky will be there this summer!) was the late night gatherings around a giant fire pit. Between Pete Seeger songs we'd gab, swig, and roast marshmallows to crispy gooey perfection before topping them with a square of Hershey's chocolate and smooshing them between two crisp graham crackers.
The recipe for s'mores was first published in the 1927 edition of Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts. Now known for their delicious cookies (PS did you know they have a Girl Scout cookie iPhone app?!) it's no surprise that a group known for all american confections gave us the s'more.
While I am dedicated to the original, a new incarnation of this campfire treat has arrived on the scene...introducing...THE S'MUFFIN!
Brought to you by Gotta Have S'more, the s'muffin takes all things s'more and layers them into an adorable muffin shaped treat. The original contains graham cracker crust, melted Hershey's chocolate, and toasted marshmallow, though variations are created daily. With flavors like Crème de Menthe, Cookies ‘n Crème, and most recently, a chocolate covered variety, there's a s'muffin for everyone and every occasion.
Apparently s'muffins are even making a foray into the wedding market, though I'd be hesitant to put all my s'muffins in one basket unless I was throwing a woodsy fête where they'd add to the theme.
While s'muffins will set you back a pretty penny, it's nice to know that a portion of the proceeds goes to Women for Women International, an organization that helps women survivors of war rebuild their lives. You can purchase s'muffins in 4 packs ($10.50) or by the dozen ($27.95) online, or venture to The Platine Bakery, The Oaks Gourmet Market, or The Nosh of Beverly Hills to greet your sweet treat in person.
After eating your first s'muffin (preferably microwaved for 10 seconds) the only thing you'll be able to say is, "give me s'more!"
